silly state...er...country...laws: let's make fun of canada!

September 13, 2014 Kristen Carr

As you may know, we wrapped up our "Silly State Law Saturday" posts last week. After fifty weeks of ridiculing each U.S. state's silly animal laws one by one, I just couldn't let things go this week.

One of my blogging buddies has supported my Saturday series by joining me every week with a great sense of humor and a thoughtful comment. I appreciate each and every one of you who has visited, appreciated my twisted sense of humor, and left a comment. But this gal is something special. She has visited and commented on each and every post. Without fail. And she's not even American!

So this post is dedicated to Jenna of Canada, who blogs at Love is Being Owned by a Husky. If you've not yet discovered her blog, please check it out. She's just about as sweet as they come, and she is funny and informative. Go now. No–WAIT. Read my post first, and then go. Now we get to make fun of her homeland's ridiculous animal laws in her honor.

In Montreal, if you stay at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, they are obliged to feed your horse. Free feed for my horse? Does he get to sleep in the bed with me, too?

In Toronto, you must not drag a dead horse down Yonge Street on a Sunday. You must take a detour, or perhaps wait until Monday. Don't throw your back out.

It is illegal to hit innocent little seal pups over the head with a heavy club. But if they've made mischief, have at it.

In Alberta, businesses must provide rails for tying up horses. That's all fine and dandy, but if there's not free food, I'm going to the Queen Elizabeth Hotel.

It is against the law to make burgers out of polar bears. A nice fillet, though?

One may not own more than two Siberian Huskies in any single household without a musher's license. Really? Jenna, I'm sending the authorities. (Just kidding...totally fake law...had to do it). Check out Jenna's fabulous trio of pooches on her blog.

Thanks to all who have enjoyed our Silly Saturday posts over the last 50 weeks. If you think of a country you'd like us to check out, please let me know. We take any and all requests! If you missed any of the states, you can check out the entire series here.

silly state law saturday: wyoming

September 6, 2014 Kristen Carr

It's the end of a chapter. Fifty weeks of these ridiculous animal laws, and we are on our last state, Wyoming. I'll be sad to see the series go, but we'll move on to even better things! Wyoming kept it short and sweet for us.

• You may not take a picture of a rabbit from January to April without a permit. I don't know about you, but if I catch the Easter Bunny in action, I'm documenting it!

• Using a firearm to fish is strictly forbidden. Why don't we lift the law and just let natural consequences weed out the gene pool?

• It is illegal to tattoo a horse with the intent of making it unrecognizable to its owner. Just use paint. It's faster and less painful for the horse. I won't tell.

silly state law saturday: wisconsin

August 30, 2014 Kristen Carr

Most Wisconsin laws revolve around cheese regulation, but there are a few ridiculous animal laws for us to enjoy. Check it out:

• Livestock have the right-of-way on public roads. You mean, we can't just run them down?

• In La Crosse, it is illegal to tie up your horse along Third Street. Just let them roam free, instead. They have the right-of-way.

• In La Crosse, it it illegal to worry a squirrel. They are so jittery, anyway. How do you tell if they are truly worried? That's a set-up if I ever heard one.

• In Sheboygan, only police officers may shoot birds in the city. Because we all know what lawbreakers pigeons are. We have to crack down, once and for all.

• In Sun Prairie, cats are forbidden from entering cemeteries. Just give them a heads-up. They'll listen. Cats always do what their people say.

Next week, we'll wrap up our Silly State Law Saturday series with Wyoming! Come back and visit.

silly state law saturday: washington

I have a new favorite state! Washington takes the cake in the way of ridiculous animal laws. Check it out:

• In Seattle, it is illegal to carry a fishbowl or aquarium onto a bus because the sound of the water sloshing may disturb other passengers. Yes, it must be deafening and completely drown out the bus engine sound. And–incidentally–how often does this actually happen? A law?

• In Walla Walla, it is illegal to give noxious substances to a bird in any city park. Just step outside the gates, however...

• In Wilbur, you may not ride an ugly horse. Who, pray tell, is the judge of this status?

• It is illegal to catch a fish by throwing a rock at it. But it's so effective. Isn't it?

• In Spokane, It is illegal to interrupt a religious meeting by having a horse race (repealed). Thank goodness this has been repealed! Don't waste your money on the plate pass, people!

And, I must just preface the reveal of the next law with this: We've covered 47 states so far, and this, without competition, is my favorite law I've seen so far. It made me LOL for longer than I care to admit, and I won't even try to provide commentary. It speaks for itself. Drumroll, please:

• The harassing of Bigfoot, Sasquatch or other undiscovered subspecies is a felony punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment.

Ta-da!

Join us next Saturday when we take a look at West Virginia!

What the state of Virginia lacks in quantity of ridiculous animal laws, they make up for in quality. Check it out:

• No animal may be hunted for on Sunday, with the exception of raccoons, which may be hunted until 2:00 a.m. Okay, then. Is "Late Sunday Raccoon Hunters of Virginia" the next reality show?

• In Culpeper, no one may wash a mule on the sidewalk. Someone needs to open a mule wash. A fortune is to be made.

• In Norfolk, you may not spit on a sea gull. Sea gulls are pretty spry and somewhat aggressive. I'd love to see the attempt.

• In Prince William County, no person may keep a skunk as a pet. I don't see why not. Once again, natural consequences, people.

We'll see you next week when we visit Washington!
